Microsoft = ???
Check out this link, http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-happened-to-NetMeeting. It is talking about how netmeeting disappeared, and what to use instead. My interest came when I read this
If no network exists and you are all in the same room, Windows Meeting Space will set up an ad hoc network automatically.
The purpose of netmeeting is to collaborate with other people who are not in the same room as you. I don’t know how Microsoft works, but in my company, if people are in the same room we don’t need a webcam and our monitor to communicate, we just talk.
