| On 30 Nov 1851, the Clay County Courthouse at Bowling Green, IN was destroyed by fire. Reports of the fire indicate that all recorders' records survived. From the examination of Vols A and B, this is probably not the case. It appears that perhaps from 1/3 to 1/2 of the deed records from 1825 until May 1835 were lost. There are references as "recorded Jan 10, 1823 in record book B, p 9, transcribed Dec 1, 1845" From evidence of the population of the county and the limited number of pages for these first 2 volumes, one can conclude that some deed records were lost, probably as a result of the 1851 fire. | ||||||||||
