Jacob Fauss’ Bible

Following is a transcription of an article that can be found in the "Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey," Vol 75, No 1, p. 14:

JACOB FAUSS

A Bible Record covering three generations of the same family, was recently presented to the Hunterdon County Historical Society by a lineal descendant. The Bible, printed in Trenton in 1791 by Isaac Collins, bears an inscription on the flyleaf that it was purchased by Jacob Fauss on 22 December 1792. Writing in the first-person singular,Jacob made the initial entries in the Bible, the records being continued by his son, Samuel Fauss (1777-1831) and in return by his daughter, Catharine Fauss (1806-1884), the wife of Jacob Bodine. Jacob Fauss (1740-1806) was a resident of Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, where he made his will on 20 September 1805. By this instrument he left his son Samuel the "English Bible," evidently the one published by Collins in 1791 in which the following record was written. This is Bible Record number 5514 in the GSNJ collection.

Nota bene: A marriage bond was issued 27 Oct 1772 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey for a marriage between George Pickelsimer and Margret Speace. I believe this Margaret Speace is the mother in law Margaret Bechtelsheimer mentioned above. She would have been 62 years old when she married George Bechtelsheimer, having previously been married to a Mr. Speace [or Space] by whom she had a daughter, Margaret, born in 1743. Margaret's mother, Margaret, was born in 1714. Therefore George Bechtelsheimer [Pickelsimer] would have been born probably a little before 1714 making him the earliest verified birth of a member of this family. In my opinion this George is likely one and the same as Elder Johan George.

The tombstones of Jacob and Margaret Fauss can be found on findagrave.
